Montego Bay High School for Girls

Brief  History

Montego Bay High School was established in 1935 by the Government of Jamaica to fill the need of an ‘all girls’ high school in the Parish of St. James. It was the first government owned high school for girls established on the Island of Jamaica.

With its strong ties to the Anglican Church and under the able leadership of Miss Blanche Jeffery-Smith, the school began with forty students (40) and three teachers. It was established with the aim of developing in its students, mental alertness, physical health, spiritual consciousness and a sense of responsibility. As a result, students would grow up to become self-reliant individuals capable of earning their own livelihood while serving the community. The school from inception was aimed at helping students achieve a high level of academic performance and discipline.

Over the years, the student population has increased to over one thousand students hence new buildings had to be erected. In the 1980’s a new building funded by the PTA and Past Students Associations was added and houses the Library, Physics and Computer Laboratories, a cafeteria and the Bursar’s Office.

The school has maintained a record of strong academic excellence and the results in external examinations far exceed the national average. Recurrently, its students have been awarded outstanding performances in the CXE examinations.

The school boasts an exceptionally strong program of extra-curricular activities and musical aptitude spearheaded by some the most talented and dedicated teachers in Jamaica.

The present Headmistress is Mrs. Faith Clemmings.
